Margaret Ferris, a senior at Mount Saint Mary Academy, has received a $1,000 scholarship from Next Gen Personal Finance for her creative response to the National Payback Challenge.
The challenge entailed playing a game that simulated the process of applying for, choosing and attending college, all of which is designed to explore the financial effects of the choices one may make throughout college. After playing the game, they were tasked with writing a 250-word essay that addressed the prompt, “how has the game changed your impression of what college life will be like in the 21st century?”
Ferris’s essay discussed the implications of debt and the importance of awareness of financial situations from an early age.
Kathleen Brennan, Department of Mathematics Chairperson at Mount Saint Mary Academy, said, “I’m so proud of Margaret. To be recognized among the nearly 1,200 submissions from across the country is quite an accomplishment!”
