Average mortgage rates ended the week higher across the board. Borrowers on the hunt for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage can expect to see rates averaging 4.386%, up nearly half a percentage point from a month ago.

The rate for a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage moved up to 3.503% while the 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgage is averaging 3.005%Homeowners planning on a mortgage refinance will find rates averaging 4.463% for a 30-year fixed-rate loan and 3.714% for a 15-year loan. The 5/1 ARM meanwhile is averaging 3.053%.

  • The latest rate on a 10/1 ARM is 3.457%. ⇑

Money’s daily mortgage rates reflect what a borrower with a 20% down payment and a 700 credit score — roughly the national average score — might pay if he or she applied for a home loan right now. Each day’s rates are based on the average rate 8,000 lenders offered to applicants the previous business day. Freddie Mac’s weekly rates will generally be lower, since they measure rates offered to borrowers with higher credit scores.

The long payback time of a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage means the payment will be relatively low compared and the fixed-rate means predictable payments. The downside is that. interest rate tends to be higher than some other loan types, so you’ll pay more in overall costs.
